Special Election 

To be Held July 9, 2024

A Special Election to fill two council vacancies will be held on 

July 9, 2024 

Polling place will be Baxter Community Center

A Petition for Special Election was received by City Hall from Citizens after the council filled the recent council vacancy by appointment on May 28, 2024.

A Petition for Special Election was not received by City Hall after the council filled an earlier vacancy by appointment in January. 

Iowa law requires vacant seats filled by appointment to be placed on the ballot of the next city council election.  Therefore, both vacancies will be on the July 9, 2024, ballot. 

Nomination papers are being accepted through June 14, 2024.   Please see Candidate Information flyer for how to file nomination papers. 



Candidate Information to file Nomination Papers


First date to file Nomination Papers:             June 6, 2024

Last Day to file Nomination Papers:              June 14, 2024

                      Jasper County Auditor’s will accept papers up to 5:00 p.m. June 14, 2024


                        Papers received after the deadline will NOT be accepted. 


Candidates will need to complete the following forms: 

Papers are located on the Secretary of State’s website, City Hall and City Website, and Jasper County Auditor’s Office. 

                        State of Iowa Affidavit of Candidacy:

  • Office Sought  - City Council Member

  • Vacancy – “Yes” to fill a vacancy

  • Special Election on July 9, 2024

  • Candidate’s signature MUST be Notarized. 

                        State of Iowa Nomination Petition for Non-Partisan Office:

  • Name as is should appear on ballot and on the Affidavit of Candidacy.

  • Special Election on July 9, 2024

  • Running to “fill a vacancy” yes. 

  • Top of form must be filled out prior to seeking signatures

  • 10 valid signatures required

    • It is recommended to receive more than 10 signatures

    • Ditto marks are not allowed

    • Eligible Signers:

      • Reside within city limits

      • Eligible to vote

        • Does not have to be registered to vote

Filing Papers: 

  • Anyone may turn in the Candidates forms

  • Both forms must be completed prior to submittal

  • Both forms must be turned in at the same time

  • No electronic submittals will be accepted

  • Nomination papers are considered an open record


  • There will be two vacancies on the ballot as there have been two resignations and appointments since the last election. 

  • Iowa Law requires a vacancy filled by appointment to be on the next city election.
